What do you think about the term Big Data?

Today Big Data is frequently used in many different ways. To some Big data means a big table of data e.g client information, and to others it means data captured by social network e.g. Twitter or Facebook.

Big Data constantly evolve in parable to technology development. When we first spoke about Big Data many years ago, data size is just some Gigabytes but now, we are already utilizing Terabyte. Up next will be Petabyte.

Big Data needs to fulfill these conditions having, volume, variety and velocity. Some theorist mentioned five conditions conditions, volume, velocity, variety, veracity and value with some adding Variety and Visualization into the mix.

Being a specialist in Big-Data Psychologist, I use data to understand and answer different topics on Life Sciences and Healthcare.

For example, to analyse an incident an Mental Health in a country and its evolution, , extracting the data directly of each hospital. This include every category like  Depression disorder, Anexiety disorder, Alzheimer Disease, Parkinson Disease.

This creates a real radiography of actual situation. You will be able to compare data of other countries, or even to create predictive models in function of expected evolution.

Another application of Big Data in Health Care is about the predicted effect of medications in functions of thousands of data of each patient. in function of this genetic data, family background.

Where do you see Big Data and its technologies create the most impact?

The application of Big Data in the finance sector and in Business is the best illustration.

New advances in the healthcare sector is promising. You can now design individualized medication, understand the map of the brain for specific illness like Alzheimer’s disease, or design preventions plans based on individual characteristics are some examples of Big Data application.

What are the job opportunities / roles available in the area of Big Data?

There is a big demand in jobs like Data Scientist, Data Analyst, Data Miner or Data Visualization Expert workers etc…

Countries with the most demand in these positions are USA and India. This is only the beginning. Reports have shown that there will be thousands of new vacancies for Big Data related position. In fact, MNCs are actively seeking expets in Big Data.

What are the job opportunities / roles available in the area of Big Data?

The roles are very fluid. Just a few year ago everything was about capturing, storing and processing data. Now this is largely a solved problem, and these functions will be automated and outsourced to generalized products. The growth is in data analysis and machine learning. I expect a rise of domain specific roles, like “marketing data scientist,” “UI/UX data scientist,” “sales data scientist,” etc.

What advice would you give to someone going into a Big Data position for the first-time?

Don’t get caught up with one technology, keep looking out for new things. Surprisingly, don’t concentrate on technology at all! Look for business value, try to be useful for the company.

What are the skills and knowledge expected of an Big Data professional

It is a very challenging job as you need to know many things. A traditional list includes programming skills, statistical inference, Big Data platforms, machine learning techniques, plus data visualizations and communication with business people.

But if you really want to challenge yourself, I would replace communication skills with the ability to preach Big Data, the ability to persuade people in your organization. In fact, the biggest risk for Big Data is to become a silo that only responds to requests for aggregated reports. You are aggregating all the value out! If you want to overcome it, you will need to be an evangelist of “decision-making with Big Data.”

The term is a bit of a misnomer actually. Big data does not only refer to large volumes of data. you need to also consider the variety of data (text, images, audio and video) and the velocity of data (the speed at which we generate data)

It impacts the economy (profits, cost savings), governments (cost savings, efficiency) and society. Big data cuts across all industries and if you organization is generating data, you will need to perform (big) data analytics in order to remain competitive.
